Bom Sabado! Orkut Bug

Few hours back I got few scraps from my friends just saying “Bom Sabado!” The first thing which I did was translated it to see what does it means and its was written in Portuguese saying “Good Saturday!”

However this message was coming from friends who were not knowing Portuguese that made me suspicious to investigate on it. Then on further research I came to know that Orkut has been attached by a bug.

 

Symptoms of bug Bom Sabado!

1. Automatically  messages are been sent to all your friends saying “Bom Sabado!”
2. Automatically  you would be added to few numbers of communities few are shown below.

Precautions / Workaround

1. Do not log-in into Orkut till the issue is been solved.
2. Change your passwords.
3. Change your securities questions and answers.
4. Clear your browsers cookies and cache.
5. Use the old version of Orkut and remove the communities which has been added without your knowledge. But once this has been done do log out again to be on safer side.
6. Use m.orkut.com if you cant take your hands off from Orkut
7. Disable the JavaScript of your browsers

As this issue has been passed on to the Orkut team, hence let us hope for the best and let the team do their their job to clean up this mess as soon as possible.

Any more workarounds or solutions to this issue would be useful for others so do share your suggestions with us.

Orkut News: New version for Orkut is released

Today Orkut officially announced and launched a brand new version of orkut for its team members and some of the lucky orkut users as well and guess what I am one of them. This is a huge step taken by orkut as whole orkut interface has been changed and I have to say its pretty impressive. Lets look at the what all we have in new version of orkut.

Features in new version of orkut:

- Fewer pages and faster browsing

- A clean and simple interface

- Greater personalization

Fewer pages and faster browsing

No one likes to wait keeping this in mind Orkut has improved its loading speed by using Google Web Toolkit (GWT) and also reduced number of pages as well which will take less time in waiting for things to load and more time doing what really matters which is hanging out with your friends!

• Fewer pages to get more control over your account like list of all your friends and communities can be seen in one frame block just by scrolling that block.  

A clean and simple interface

Its good to see that Orkut has not congested all the things in reducing the pages. The new looks looks clean and simple but though dynamic which is the best part. Now you can even use your friends' profile pages to keep up with their most recent activities and leave them scraps which is similar to facebook or twitter. Other cool features..

2. Recent visitors thumbnail photos rather then having their name 

3.Targeted friend suggestions

 

Greater personalization

You can personalize your orkut profile and homepage choosing from 5 colors Blue, Green, Orange, Pink and Black. One drawback is that with this new orkut version there is no orkut theme’s available for now other features…

This new version of orkut is rolled out to few of the orkut user so if you have any friends who has an active new version account ask him to invite you  or you can even come to know by this icon that will appear on your friends' profile pages, next to their names. One more option is available you can join official community by which you can get an invite.

How to remove both ads from Orkut

Few days back I had posted a post about Google added new dimension ads on Orkut which was second advertisement having 728x90 dimensions was added on Orkut till now and before this we were having advertisement on right hand side the Large Rectangular ad with dimensions 250x250 which was placed above my friends.

Now if you are bugged up seeing these ads on Orkut and wish to remove both the ads. To fulfill your wish Orkut Plus has come up with a userscript which will remove both ads from Orkut. You can see the difference in the snap-shot.

Installation Instructions:-
This script is will work on Firefox since it uses Greasemonkey, a Firefox Add-on.

Follow the steps to get an advertisement free Orkut :-

1) Download Firefox if you don’t have it.
2) From your Firefox page itself Install Greasemonkey.
3) Now Install the Script the theme.
4) Now open your Orkut account and enjoy Orkut ad free.

Google added new dimension ads on Orkut

Few months back Orkut had changed Google ads region on Orkut profiles and now Google has yet come again with a new region and a new dimension of ads to advertise on Orkut. The dimension of this new advertisement is 728x90 and its similar to Top Banner advertising which can been seen when you are viewing yours or anyone's else's photos on Orkut.

History of ads on Orkut

Few years back there were no ads on Orkut, then came the Large Rectangular ad with dimensions 250x250 which was not visible on home page of your Orkut profile as it was placed below my communities, then it was moved above my communities and right now it has jumped over my friends has been placed on top right side.

As recently Google added 728x90 dimensions ads, I’m guessing their would be lot more ads to be seen in coming years on Orkut. What do you think about it? Will their be more ads added ? Share your opinions with us.

Orkut favicon has been changed

Yesterday an Anonymous person had shared his finding with us about Orkut’s favicon which has been changed by leaving a comment on Soon Orkut will no longer provide support for IE 6.

 

New Orkut favicon is definitely a better looking favicon then the last one the difference can been seen below.

Now the question comes up with this new favicon, does it mean that Orkut is changing its logotype? Or its only the change in Orkut favicon? Personally I feel that right now this is only a change in Orkut favicon, but would have to wait and watch what all gets changed with this new favicon.

Soon Orkut will no longer provide support for IE 6

One of my colleagues and a good friend Chandrasen had sent me a snap-shot of his fiends Orkut profile which displaces an important message, rolled out to most of Orkut users who are using Internet Explore 6. 

When you log into Orkut with IE 6 you would get the following message:

We will be phasing out support for your browser version (Internet Explorer 6) soon. Please upgrade to one of these more modern browsers: Internet Explorer 6 -> Internet Explorer 8, Google Chrome, or Mozilla Firefox

Google is recommending IE 8 at first place and then its own bowers Google Chrome at second place, but fact is Firefox stands at second place for browser by market share. However core part of this message is to upgrade your browser if you are using IE 6 with Orkut as soon as possible

How to Promote Your Stuff on Orkut

Recently Orkut has come up with a free new feature called Orkut “Promote” to help you guys promote your stuff with all your Orkut friends. Before you had to scrap each and every friend to spread the word but now with ‘promote’ introduced to Orkut things will be much easier and quicker.

Features of new promote tool:

1. You can promote text, photos from your Orkut albums and YouTube videos.
2. Built-in “Spread” can be used by your friends to promote your stuff with their friends. Its like re-prompting your stuff.
3. Built-in “Trash” to remove the promote which you do not link.
4. “my promotion” tab shows you numbers of users viewed, clicked, deleted your promotions as well how far they’ve spread.
5. You can stop or delete a promotion any time which you’ve created.

Google knows how to promote things very well that's why they have placed the promotions on the upper right corner friends home and profile pages which would replace Google advertisements above my friends.

      

Steps to create a promotion:

1. Click on “promote” on your left side of your Orkut profile.
2. Choose a title of your promotions.
3. Give the description of your promotion in comment. 
4. Select Text, Photos or YouTube video for content.
5. Click create promotion button.

Advantage of promote:

Using Orkut promote you can promote almost anything and everything that too in no time with a bigger audiences. Google charges advertisers for promotion while regular Orkut members don't have to pay any fee for using Orkut promote.

Again A New Region For Google Ads In Orkut

If you all remember I wrote a post New Region For Google Ads In Orkut last year. That time Orkut had brought the ads above my communities and below my friends recently when I opened my Orkut account I noticed ads have jumped over my friends and now its above it have a look at below snap-shot.

From beginning my friends was always on top right-hand side and people like me are used to it in that way however I think that Google is trying to get more attention of Orkut users towards these ads and trying to get some more bucks out of Orkut. Let us know what do you think about this new region for ads.

Google Launched Orkut Mobile App

If you all remember I had written a post few months back Google Is All Set To Release Orkut App for Mobile Phones yesterday was the day when Google launched beta Orkut mobile application which you all can download on all Java-enabled phones which includes some of the popular phones like Nokia N95, Nokia 6300 and Sony Ericsson W580i.

Top five favorite features of Orkut mobile app:

• Upload photos to orkut on-the-go, directly from your phone.
• View scraps, friends' updates, and photo albums while you're offline.
• Share your orkut albums with all of your friends whether they use orkut or not (via SMS).
• Easily call or SMS your orkut friends and address book contacts from within the app.
• Get automatic updates when your friends change their contact information or orkut profiles.

Steps to download:

1. Go to m.google.com/orkut from your mobile phone’s browser.
2. It will ask you to “Install” the application which is 495 KB.
   
3. After it gets installed you have to go to the application ( In Nokia phones it will be in the application folder) and select it.
   
4. Then Orkut app will start loading.
   
5. Once its loading is completed you will have to sign-in with your Orkut account. That’s all.

Once Again A New Look For Orkut Email Notification !

You might be aware that Orkut had got a new look for its email notification which was updated last year. Today I checked my email and noticed Orkut has once again changed its email notification. Check out the snap shot below.

Orkut Launched New Built-in Chat Roster

I just logged in my account and saw a brand new built-in chat feature within Orkut. This is a similar chat box as Gmail chat but on your bottom-left hand side. So now you can enjoy the chat and hang out more with your online friends within Orkut.

This new built-in chat roster shows you all of your contacts who are signed into Google Talk irrespective you have logged in through Orkut, Gmail, iGoogle or the Gtalk. You just have to click on their names to start the chat with any of your friends who are online.

Features of built-in Orkut chat roster:

1. Chat roster is always set on bottom-left hand side, no matter which page you are.
2. It integrates all you friends from Gmail contact and Gtalk.
3. Get invisible if you don’t want to get bugged every time.
4. You can get singed off, without getting singed off from Orkut.
5. Minimize the chat roster with a single click.
6. Customize the size and organize your chat roster by clicking on the option tab
7. And a great Search as well.

Orkut team has begun to roll out this new feature out for everyone. Make sure you have enabled chat in Orkut. If you have not seen a chat roster yet then just cross your fingers that it comes in your account soon.

Google Latitude is now on Orkut- Share your location with friends

Most of you might be knowing about Google Latitude or may be using it as well. With this new application you can share your approximate location with your friends. Google team was knowing that this new few application couldn't been completed without adding it  to Orkut. So they launched it today as Google Latitude application in Orkut. I had written a post Google maps on Orkut  a year back which was more or less similarly to this post however that was not an application.

Steps to add Google Latitude application:

1. Click: - Google Latitude application  and login in your account account and add the application.
2. After that click Agree button.
3. In Friends tab you can set your status, set your location or even Get Google Latitude on your phone as shown in the snap shot.
   
   
4. In Add friends tab you can select which friends would you like to share or should know your location.
   
   
5. Privacy will give you options to chose how would you like to Set your location.
   
   
6. Now you can let your friends know wherever your are.
   
   

Once you add this application in your Orkut profile you can share your location and see your friend’s location on a map inside of Orkut. So if any of your friend is near your location just click his/her photo and send a scrap like “Can we meet up”.

You can even set your location on the go if your are using Google Latitude from your mobile. However Google team has taken Latitude privacy feature very seriously which could help you a lot. For more information check out the Latitude- Google Privacy tips video below.
